The White Cliffs
are historically known for mining for gold and silver. There is a great hiking track from Okupu to the Forest Road on Great Barrier Island. Half way on this track, you get the following view of the White Cliffs. I walked up there a couple hours before sunset. It was windy with inclement weather. The sky was grey and overcast, but I decided to wait until sunset. Hoping that some colour will appear. I have written about the remarkable sensation of being in nature and somehow feeling totally isolated. There are no un-natural sounds, no people, one feels at one with nature. In a sense it is meditative and I can relax and “empty” my mind. Finding a good composition, setting exposure and waiting for the dramatic light to appear. I quite enjoy these moments.
Fortunately, the sunset was dramatic and colourful. I used a neutral density filter to use slower shutter speeds, but the best shot ended up being this one. This is without an ND filter.
Have a great day, Ben
